The Fort Morgan Mustangs avoided the Holy Family Tigers and another trip to Broomfield for regionals this week. Instead of playing in a regional hosted by the team that swept them 3 0 in mid September, the Mustangs will head a little further south to D’Evelyn High School for regionals Friday afternoon.
Facing a team from the Jeffco League will still prove to be a tall task for the Mustangs, but a veteran roster has them feeling confident in stealing a bid to the state tournament.
Fort Morgan came up short of repeating as Colorado 7 League champs when the team lost a 2 1 lead in Keensesburg to the Weld Central Rebels on Oct. 12. Since that loss, the Mustangs have won four games all by sweep to conference opponents to finish with an 18 5 record.
Playing with a roster primarily made of seniors and juniors, the Mustangs believe that this year is their best chance to move past the regional tournament. The team has taken progressive steps over the last few years, starting with qualifying for regionals in 2015 to snap a lengthy streak of missing the postseason. Last year, Fort Morgan won a regional game over Pueblo East before falling to Montrose in the regional championship.
That leaves one more step to go for the team: win two games and move on to state.
A strong front line for the Mustangs has been the biggest key to success this year. Haley Lewis leads the team with 242 kills and is one of three players with 100 or more kills this season. Riley Bauman is second with 127 kills and Kelsey Shaver is third with 114. Kelsey Kalous is the team leader with 100 blocks, Bauman follows with 75, both Hallee Shaver and Kelsey Shaver have 40 and Lewis is currently at 35.
Hitting up front and slowing down opposing offenses are critical for the Mustangs to get past The Classical Academy and D’Evelyn.
Facing Fort Morgan first will be The Classical Academy Titans from the Colorado Springs Metro League. The Titans went 13 9 overall in the regular season and finished tied for first place with Elizabeth at 7 1 in league play. With the tiebreaker going to Elizabeth, the Titans fall to the No. 31 seed in the 4A regional field.
Raegan Bervig and Autumn Boyles are the only two players with 100 or more kills for the team. Looking to slow down the offense from the Mustangs up front are Boyles, Olivia Jacobsen and Graysen Kraft, three players with 85 or more blocks this year.
Unlike Fort Morgan, the Titans are a young team with four seniors and four juniors. A couple of freshmen and sophomores do see significant time in the rotation.
In the final game of the 4A Region 6 tournament, Fort Morgan will face the host team, the D’Evelyn Jaguars. Finishing behind Valor Christian in the Jeffco League, D’Evelyn comes in with a 19 4 record. Out of the three teams, the Jaguars are perhaps the most battle tested and play in the strongest of the three conferences.
To slow down the Mustangs’ offense, D’Evelyn will counter with a strong back line of defense. Five players are sitting around 200 digs this year, led by Natalie Haggard with 208. Sophia Hoffman (206 digs) and Peyton Wright (202 digs) are the other players over 200 digs for the Jaguars. Just short of the 200 dig mark are Lorena Payne (198) and Juli Helm (187).
Wright is one of three players for the Jaguars with triple digit kills on offense and leads the team with 193. Hoffman is second with 184 and Helm is third with 134. D’Evelyn connects on 38 percent of its kill attempts, the same percent as Fort Morgan. with D’Evelyn facing The Classical Academy. to face the Jaguars.
