mulberry brown bag Court Continues For Former Pitt County Sheriff
The judge heard emotional testimony from Gail Lynch Manning, who said she never should have called police last Monday. She said her husband “never has laid a hand on me” in all their years of marriage. She told the judge it was just a husband and a wife having an argument, she got very angry and in the midst of that anger she called police.
Manning’s wife called him “a fine,
Godly, upstanding Christian man.”
The 56 year old Manning was sheriff for 12 years. they received a call from Gail Lynch Manning on Mulberry Lane. The woman told officers she and her husband had been in a verbal dispute. The wife said at some point her husband “slapped her in the hand, resulting in visible bruises.”
Police then learned the woman’s husband was the former sheriff.
Detectives took the case to District Attorney Kimberly Robb who told police to proceed with prosecution.
The warrant says the former sheriff slapped her right hand twice “causing bruising,
swelling and blood blisters.”
